Kari graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence and is licensed through the state of Arizona in Speech-Language Pathology. Kari has professional certification as a Certified Autism Specialist and is a UCLA PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) certified trainer. Kari has extensive experience and training in Social Thinking® and is able to address the social/pragmatic and executive functioning needs of students with ADHD, ASD and related social communication disorders. She is a member of International Dyslexia Association and provides consultation, training and staff development in Structured Literacy. Her knowledge of speech and language development as the underpinnings of literacy skills can provide additional insight to learning struggles.
Kari has over 25 years of clinical experience working with children and adults with a variety of developmental and neurogenic disorders. She has worked in home health, early intervention settings, non-for-profit agencies, hospitals, schools and private clinics. Kari has maintained a private practice over the last 18 years providing assessment and treatment to children 0-21 years of age with a vast variety of social learning disabilities, developmental speech/language delays and language-based learning disabilities. Past highlights of her practice included AAC and AT evaluations and therapy as well as assessment and treatment for Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Deaf/Hearing Impaired, and Cleft Palate.
Drawing from her graduate training and expanding her knowledge through extensive professional development and certification training coursework, Kari’s current focus in her private practice is in Language-Based Learning Disabilities (including Dyslexia and Dysgraphia) as well as Social Communication Disabilities (including Autism and ADHD). She is extremely knowledgeable in executive function disorder and its impact on learning and communication success. She is well-recognized for her skill in assessing highly verbal individuals who struggle with more subtle nuances of social communication, including girls with an observably milder presentation of ASD. Because of Kari’s understanding of brain-behavior relationships and co-morbidity of language disorders that occur in these populations, Kari is able to assess and analyze complex language and communication disorders that are often under-identified.
Kari is a 4th generation native of Arizona. She and her husband have one daughter who is currently attending Northern Arizona University and majoring in biomedical sciences. Kari also has a therapy dog in training – Winnie – who just turned a year old this fall. Kari enjoys all things outdoors and has recently begun to play Pickleball with some success. She is conversant in ASL and Spanish and hopes to participate in a Spanish immersion program next summer. In her spare time, she enjoys healthy cooking and creative (experimental) gluten free baking.
